Used Truck Association
I would like to thank the
Used Truck Association for their
financial support in my educational
endeavors. As a recent recipient of the
UTA scholarship for the 2007-2008 school
year, I was able to successfully finish
my senior year at the University of
Oregon. I graduated on June 13, 2008
with a Bachelor’s degree in both Family
and Human Services and Sociology. I was
awarded cum laude honors by graduating
at the top 10% of my class.
Before I began this
four-year journey at the University of
Oregon, receiving a college degree
seemed unreachable and nearly
impossible. I knew that obtaining the
funds to attend college would be a
challenge, but with the support from
generous scholarships such as this one,
my hope for earning a college degree
became an achievable goal.
I have gained so many
valuable experiences through my time
spent at the University of Oregon. I
was lucky to be a part of Alpha Phi
Omega, a community service organization
and Mortar Board, a national honor
society. Both University sponsored
organizations taught me the importance
of fellowship, leadership, and community
service. I completed three different
internships at local non-profit agencies
as part of my Family and Human Services
major and gained valuable experience
working with children and families.
During my senior year, I interned at a
non-profit agency called Womenspace,
which serves victims of domestic abuse
and their children. I created a
curriculum and resource manual for the
Womenspace Youth Program as a senior
project, in the effort to strengthen the
services provided to Womenspace’s youth
clientele and help ease the transition
of new staff, volunteers, and interns
working in the Youth Program.
Now that I have graduated
from the University of Oregon, I plan on
spending the next year working in
Eugene, Oregon and preparing my
applications for graduate school. I
have gained a passion for working in the
Human Services field and hope to pursue
a Masters degree in Marriage and Family
Therapy to gain the tools and experience
to better serve my community. I would
like to follow a career as a child and
family therapist, with a focus on
helping individuals heal from the
effects of domestic violence.
I have so much
thankfulness in my heart for the support
that the UTA has given me this last
year. I could not be happier with the
experiences I have gained from the
University of Oregon and these unique
experiences would not be possible
without the foundations and
organizations, such as yours, that
strive to help young adults achieve
their educational and career goals.
Thank you, UTA, for making a difference
in my life and the lives of future UTA
scholarship recipients.
Sincerely,
Sarah Purvis |
